APS MEMBERS
American Public Square at Jewell offers a Membership experience to anyone interested in rebuilding personal bonds and reweaving the fabric of communities. APS Members share a commitment to face society's most pressing issues, together.
Among the top perks of being an APS Member is access to the "Cocktails & Politics" event series, which blend cocktails and conversation with notable speakers at the center of the policies and politics of the day.
A highlight of these programs is below.
As the city quieted down after a day of Chiefs Super Bowl victory celebrations, APS Members and their guests gathered at 2000 Vine, a newly revitalized building in the heart of KC's historic 18th and Vine jazz district.
The headliner that evening was author Phil Allen, Jr. who shared insights from his book, "The Prophetic Lens: The Camera and Black Moral Agency." The book covers the importance of the use of the video camera as a tool for the security of Black lives and racial justice.
New APS Board Member, Dr. Rodney Smith, facilitated the conversation.
Away from the heat of a Midwest August evening, APS Members gathered at KC's Boulevard Brewery for an evening with longtime APS friend and accomplished journalist, Margaret Talev.
Talev, a former White House correspondent for Bloomberg News and McClatchey Newspapers, and now Director of the Syracuse University Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship, shared her perspectives about the state of U.S. democracy, including insights into grassroots efforts to impact elections.
It was a return appearance for Talev who had last appeared at a 2020 Cocktails & Politics virtual event to speak on the media's role in the COVID-19 crisis.
A chance meeting in Portugal led to the October "Cocktails & Politics" event with Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, a Republican governor who succeeded former Vice President Mike Pence when Pence departed his role in the White House.
When APS CEO, Allan Katz, met Governor Holcomb in Portugal, he immediately invited the governor to Kansas City using the lure of The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, a place the governor had expressed interest in seeing.
The mutually beneficial trip led to a wholly enjoyable evening of conversation with the governor who shared his perspective on how Washington might benefit from looking to the states for a guide to solving some of the nation’s biggest challenges.
